Introducing: Ye Olde Shoe Factory
November 27, 2007
It’s official. At 6pm last night I signed off all rights and responsibilities to Ms. 1890. I’m sad. She was my house. My first house. I found her. I poured myself into fixing her up. And I wanted to keep her. But I can’t afford her, and I don’t understand how Xifey will manage to keep her afloat. [file under: not my problem] Not to mention, I couldn’t possibly live next door to The Other Woman. Alas, Ms. 1890 and I will part ways this weekend when I move into Ye Olde Shoe Factory: a beautiful 2 bedroom 1 bath condo in the “arts district” of my town. For the record, 1 block of galleries/antique stores/pubs + 1 extensive marketing campaign = the arts district. It’s a 3rd floor unit. 12 foot ceilings with exposed wood beams. 8 foot windows. An exposed brick wall running the length of the place. Deeded parking. An goooooood Irish pub directly next door (ahem, not that I care about such things … ).
Any of my local yokels wanna haul boxes on Saturday? Anyone own a truck?
To the rest of my yokels: please forgive me for not replying to comments. I’m bad. Super bad. And tired. And packing. And you know … just not emailing right now. Okay? And soooooory.

You live by the origami studio too!
I hope it’s a fresh start and gives you some breathing room.

It looks really beautiful. I hope it gives you the peace and happiness you deserve.

It sounds like a nice condo…I’ve been empathizing as you did all your home renovations – lots of money poured into my 1926 house this year – and was sad that you were going to have to leave her. But there are those days I wish for a pretty condo in an old building without the hassles of an old house – I hope you & LM will be happy there!

I wish I could come out east. Hauling boxes would be better for me than the quilt shop hopping that I’m planning. It sounds like a wonderful new place.
My heart just broke reading your last post. I hope good things are on the way for you!

Hey, sorry I haven’t called you back, I’m trying to figure out the weekend. What time are you moving your crap out? Pete is happy to help and if I’m around I will too. It is Meg’s birthday and she wants us to make her feel special at some point during the day, but we should be able to work around it. Give me another call. I might return it, or I might even answer!

Lemme check on that truck for you … it would be in the later afternoon though — practice doesn’t end until 2:00 and then I’d have to get the truck after that …

I hardly ever reply to blog comments and I have nowhere near your excuse.
One piece of moving advice: Remember to eat! Not eating = eventually sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor crying. I speak from experience here.

It looks lovely.
Another piece of moving advice: set up the bed first thing. It’ll be a blessing when you suddenly notice you’ve been hauling stuff all day and you’re like to die.
I also pack something I call “The first box”, which has a kettle or pot or the coffee maker, tea and coffee, two cups, two towels, soap, hairbrush, toothbrushes. Everything you need for the first couple of hours of the morning on your first day. (ibuprofen or aspirin too, if you move like I do).
Shall I shut up now? OK, I can do that.

Let me confer with the Mr. — I’ll haul boxes if we have nothing on.
I mean if we have nothing planned.

Goodbye, Ms. 1890. Hello, new home untainted by the bad mojo of the past several months!
I agree with the advice about the First Box and setting up the bed right away. I’d also make sure that one of your local yokels brings several 6-packs of GOOD beer, and that you get the phone number for the local pizza delivery joint. Nothing tastes so good after moving as cold beer and pizza.

I’ve got a van….does that count? Hmmm…..that pub is a nice place I’ve been tehre a couple of times. Plus, don’t forget there is also my favorite icecream place near there too!

In my world there is NOTHING better than high ceilings and really big windows! I wish you and LM all the best in the new condo.
Remember to pack the toothbrushes and bathroom goodies in box #1.

I’m not good at carrying heavy things, but if you need someone to organize your kitchen stuff or books or something, I’d certainly be happy to help…

OR if you’d like someone to bring beer and food, or something. Let me know.

Exposed brick is way cool.
Hooray for a fresh start!

The place looks nice. You’ll be happier in the long run with the fresh start, but it’s hard to move.

Ye Olde Shoe Factory looks like it will be a beautiful place to live! I know you will miss you old house, but having a lovely new space to build the next part of your life will hopefully help you along. I can’t wait to see how you turn it into you very own!

Good luck with the move. I agree with all the moving advice – having the box #1 is a great idea. This would have helped me in several moves, some of which involved not only sitting in the middle of various floors crying but also falling asleep by accident in the middle of a day on the livingroom floor after moving all night and waking up having no idea where I was. Awesome.
Moving SUCKS – I’ve moved 4 times in 9 years… but, it will be a great new start for you. Congrats on the lovely sounding new condo.

Sorry I am not closer to come and haul boxes. Or deliver beer and pizza at the end of the day. Will you accept care packages? I make excellent cookies and brownies…

1st box & set up the bed first … great advise. You are going to find a whole new relaxed atmosphere to live in there. Will LM be with you on weekends? Hope so. He’ll be a big help getting you settled in and getting into a new routine. But don’t forget to put your coats on and get out and walk about … explore your new neighborhood together. A positive attitude always puts you on top. You’re on your way, girl.

Oh how I wish I lived closer. I would so load up the mommy van and help. The bed and first box are life savers, so take the advice.
I’m so glad that you are closing the door to the old chapter and forging ahead to the new chapter! You are strong and you can do this.
Don’t worry about the comments and email. We know that you are so busy with your inner circle of life that we are just happy that you are sharing with us!

How I wish I were closer. I’ve read along silently throughout this heartbreaking time because words failed to come. The new place sounds lovely (think of the warmth you’ll get for FREE on the 3rd floor).
If you decide to accept care packages, let me know…I have a killer sugar cookie recipe that is a family guarded secret.

Hey, I know that arts district! I like downtown and think the old mill buildings are cool. Your condo looks lovely…good luck with the move and settling in.

Hooray for the arts district! I have long-term plans of getting involved in making it live up to the PR. Looking forward to hauling boxes, and would be happy to get the pizza & beer. But you’ll have to tell me what kind of beer you like, since I’m not much of a beer drinker myself.

Rabbitch is right–bed first, and a first box that stays with YOU in your personal vehicle (doesn’t go in any moving truck) and it should have important items belonging to Little Man as well as your stuff. Good luck with all this. Upheaval is never easy.

Take it easy, enjoy what you can and make sanctuary for you and your LM.

Clean your bathroom, clean your kitchen, and make your bed. The rest you can take it as it comes. I am sorry about the house, but the new place looks awesome…a change of scenery will do you good.
